DIGITAL PORTFOLIO RESEARCH.

The advantages & disadvantages of free online portfolio websites.

ADVANTAGES:
1. The website is free to set-up.
2. The web hosting is free.
3. Easy to set-up and load art to.
4. Able to market from that platform to social media.
5. The web host promotes their site to attract visitors.
DISADVANTAGES:
1. Part of a community of other artists.
2. Difficult to find your website/art portfolio.
3. The art is commingled with ads and other artist’s art.
4. In most cases Search Engine Optimization (SEO) is not possible.
5. Being free usually means that there are limitations on design and size.

EVALUATING EXAMPLES OF ONLINE PORTFOLIOS:

Below, is a portfolio i find particularly eye-catching and efficient. It is a very sleek design, and the transitions between clicking on different things is very smooth. the background colours have been selected to tie in with their designs and it works really well. The content in particular is specifically impressive to me, I really like the images and ideas behind them. It is very simple and easy to use and explore and well titled and created. They've included a very easy way of contacting them through email and there are also very easy and simple ways of linking to their facebook and flickr pages. Overall, it's extremely user friendly, not over-complicated and simple to access and it looks very sleek and professional.

Below, is a online portfolio that i don't particularly like. It's mainly due to the content. i don't find any of the images or the work interesting or eyecatching. And because the images and the illustrations are very child orientated and this narrows the target audience down the way it is presented and the colours are made to link with this. It's very basic and the ways to contact are easy to find although I just don't like what they are presenting.

What is a PDF file?

Portable Document Format (PDF): is a file format used to represent documents in a manner independent of application softwarehardware, and operating system. Each PDF file encapsulates a complete description of a fixed-layout flat document, including the text, fonts, graphics, and other information needed to display it. In 1991, Adobe Systems co-founder John Warnock outlined a system called "Camelot" that evolved into PDF.
While Adobe Systems made the PDF specification available free of charge in 1993, PDF remained a proprietary format, controlled by Adobe, until it was officially released as an open standard on July 1, 2008, and published by the International Organization for Standardization as ISO 32000-1:2008. In 2008, Adobe published a Public Patent License to ISO 32000-1 granting royalty-free rights for all patents owned by Adobe that are necessary to make, use, sell and distribute PDF compliant implementations. However, there are still some technologies used in PDF files that are defined only by Adobe and remain proprietary (e.g. Adobe XML Forms Architecture, Adobe JavaScript).
